Liver Transplant by Dr Amit Nath Rastogi

Overview
Liver is the largest organ of the human body and plays an important role in digesting, absorbing and processing the food with the help of gall bladder and pancreas. Its main function is to filter the blood of the digestive tract before it is passed on to further organs of the body. The liver is also responsible for metabolism of drugs and detoxification of chemicals present in the body. A healthy liver thus is very much necessary to lead a normal life. However in some cases, the liver suffers from chronic or acute failure due to a disease or a severe injury that adversely affects the proper functioning of the liver. When any of such conditions of the liver do not respond to medications over a long time, the doctors recommend liver transplant surgery for the patient. A liver transplant is a surgical process in which a diseased liver is replaced by a healthy liver that is received from a deceased or living donor.

Need of a liver transplant

Maximum cases of liver transplant are performed for patients who are suffering from liver cirrhosis. It is a condition which causes malfunction of the liver due to a long term injury. In such condition the healthy tissues of the liver are replaced by scar tissues that prevent smooth flow of blood through the liver. Autoimmune liver diseases, Consumption of alcohol, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses, accumulation of fat in the liver and heredity are the potential causes of Liver cirrhosis. In some cases the disease can be resolved with long term treatment but if it is not responsive to any of it, the doctors suggest a liver transplant surgery to provide cure to the patient.

Types of liver transplant

The type of a liver transplant depends upon the type of donor from which a healthy liver is received.

1. Deceased Donor Transplant: In this type of transplant the liver is received from a person who has died. Usually the entire healthy liver is received by the adult patients. However in some cases the healthy liver is divided into one large and one small part. The larger part is used for adults and the smaller part is used for small children or young candidates.

2. Living Donor Transplant:
This procedure includes transplanting a part of the liver that is received from a living donor. In most of the cases it is received from family members who have the same blood group and size of the liver as that of the patient. After a time the part of the liver grows back to its original size in case of both donor and the receiver.

Survival rate after liver transplant

The success rate as well as the survival rate are different for different patients and depend upon their health and capacity to sustain the treatment and it’s after care. One year survival rate of the patient after liver transplant is 85%. It decreases to 77% for three years and is 70% for five years. The survival rate of the patients depends upon how well a person is taking the after care and following the instructions of the doctor.
